Japan's population smaller and older in 2040
Japan's government says the populations of all of the country's prefectures, including Tokyo, will be declining in 2040, and that nearly one-third of each will be over the age of 65.
The National Institute of Population and Social Security Research released the projection on Wednesday. The forecast is based on the latest results of the 2010 census and the impact of the March 2011 disaster in northeast Japan.

Death rate of senior evacuees rises in Fukushima
Researchers have found that the death rate nearly tripled among evacuees from facilities for elderly people near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
The research group from the University of Tokyo and a city-run hospital tracked 328 senior evacuees from 5 facilities in Minamisoma City. The facilities are within a 30-kilometer radius of the plant where the serious nuclear accident occurred in March 2011.

Increase in flatfeet among Fukushima children
A nursery school in Fukushima City reports a sharp increase in the number of children with flatfeet. The school blames restrictions on outdoor play imposed after the Fukushima nuclear accident 2 years ago.

Govt. to hold drill assuming Nankai Trough quake
The Japanese government says it will base the country's annual nationwide disaster drill this year on the scenario of a mega-quake in the Nankai Trough off the Pacific coast.
The Nankai Trough is a subduction zone that stretches for 900 kilometers off central to western Japan. The zone has seen repeated large-scale earthquakes throughout history.

How would you like to replace your water heater with a nuclear reactor? That's what Joseph Zawodny, a senior scientist at NASA's Langley Research Center, hopes to help bring about. It would tap the enormous power of the atom to provide hot water for your bath, warm air for your furnace system, and more than enough electricity to run your house and, of course, your electric car.

If your thoughts have raced to Fukushima or Three Mile Island or Chernobyl, let me reassure you. Zawodny is not suggesting that you put that kind of reactor in your house. What he has in mind is a generator that employs a process called Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions. (The same process is sometimes called Lattice Energy Nuclear Reactions. We'll just call it LENR.) So what is LENR and how might it one day fill all your energy needs without risk of blowing up, melting down, or irradiating the neighbors?

(Reuters) - North Korea conducted a nuclear test on Tuesday, South Korea's defence ministry said, after seismic activity measuring 4.9 magnitude was registered by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicentre of the seismic activity, which was only one km below the Earth's surface, was close to the North's known nuclear test site.

Pipes are not where they should be in drawings and calculations not correct at Fort Calhoun in Missouri. Upstream dams could fail (old infrastructure) causing a cascading fail resulting in St. Ouuis being waist deep in water. More than 35 feet more water than the flood just 18 months ago causing an upstream fail flooding of BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS resulting in the loss of ultimate heat sink. The entire midwest would be in jeopardy. (an inland tsunami). Nuclear power plants are NOT designed to withstand a dam failure.

1/10/2013 Berkeley develops quick blood test to ID people exposed to ionizing radiation

Industrial and medical accidents have resulted in about 3,000 cases of acute radiation syndrome with over 100 deaths over the past 60 years. Far larger numbers are possible in the future from major reactor accidents or the use of dirty bombs. In the aftermath of a major incident, the radiation dosages of victims must be sorted out quickly, so that suitable treatment can begin as soon as possible. Medical researchers at the US Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have now developed a simple blood test to determine the exposure of a patient to ionizing radiation, that can be carried out in the field with a hand-held analyzer.

1/10/2013 Cernavoda reactor shutdown again after failure of logic relay control system

Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant

 One of the two operational nuclear power reactors of Cernavoda nuclear power plant, the only nuclear power plant in Romania, was automatically shutdown Wednesday night by emergency system, according to Nuclearelectrica who operates the facility.  The cause of the shutdown has not been determined yet.
“Unit Two shut down on Wednesday evening, reasons unknown,” said Dumitru Dina, head of Nuclearelectrica, but did admit that some problems were found in the cooling system for the electrical generators.  The utility also indicated some disturbances were caused by failure of the logic relay control system.   A similar incident occurred in November 2012.

Iranian officials tell citizens to vacate city located near nuke site

Iranian officials have instructed residents of Isfahan to leave the city, renewing concerns that a nearby nuclear site could be leaking radioactive material.

An edict issued Wednesday by Iranian authorities orders Isfahan’s one-and-a-half million people to leave the city “because pollution has now reached emergency levels,” the BBC reported.

The Chair was Prof Barbara Rose Johnston. The earlier part of the meeting will also be uploaded to youtube. The US nuclear tests created enormous contamination and serious health problems in the Marshall Islands but these have been systematically covered up. Most recently the US Health Physics Society published a dishonest series of reports maintaining that there were no serious health effects due to the radioactive fallout. Dr Busby's paper on the issue "The health effects of exposures to radioactivity from the us pacific nuclear tests in the Marshall is. Criticisms of the analysis of Simon et al 2010: Radiation doses and cancer risks in the Marshall islands associated with exposure to radioactive fallout from Bikini and Enewetak nuclear weapons tests and supporting documentation. Dr Busby's main recommendations were adopted by the Special Rapporteur to the UNHCR in his report to the General Assembly. These were that there should be a fully independent study both of the remaining fallout in the Marshall Islands and also an independent Epidemiological study of the health of the inhabitants.
