— A small radioactive water leak prompted Duke Energy to shut down a reactor Monday at the Oconee Nuclear Station in South Carolina.

Utility officials said the leak in Unit 1 poses no danger, but it is the second time in less than three weeks a problem has shut down a reactor at the nuclear plant near Seneca built 40 years ago.

Engineers first noticed the possibility of the leak Friday in the airtight, steel-lined concrete containment building designed to prevent any radiation from leaking into the air or ground. They spent the weekend trying to pinpoint its location and severity, Duke Energy spokeswoman Valerie Patterson said.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Typhoon Soulik's strong winds caused one of the reactors at Taiwan's First Nuclear Power Plant to automatically shut down as part of precautionary measures twice on Saturday.

At 2:50 a.m. on July 13, strong winds knocked out systems designed to reduce the likelihood of direct lighting strikes on the facility at the plant's number two reactor unit, resulting in an automatic shutdown. While repairs were carried out on the system, the reading for the number of neutrons became exceedingly high, once again leading to an emergency shutdown as part of protection measures.

The Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station remained shut down Sunday after one of its four reactor coolant pumps experienced trouble. ASSOCIATED PRESS
OAK HARBOR, Ohio — The Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station remained shut down today as more details emerged about what caused the unplanned closure.
Workers identified a problem with electrical wiring that connects a terminal box to the motor that powers one of the plant’s four reactor coolant pumps, said Jennifer Young, a FirstEnergy spokesman.
The wiring requires repair, and testing of the motor continues, she said. She did not know when the plant would restart or what caused the wiring problem.

Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant
One of the two operational nuclear power reactors of Cernavoda nuclear power plant, the only nuclear power plant in Romania, was automatically shutdown Wednesday night by emergency system, according to Nuclearelectrica who operates the facility.  The cause of the shutdown has not been determined yet.
“Unit Two shut down on Wednesday evening, reasons unknown,” said Dumitru Dina, head of Nuclearelectrica, but did admit that some problems were found in the cooling system for the electrical generators.  The utility also indicated some disturbances were caused by failure of the logic relay control system.   A similar incident occurred in November 2012.

MONROE CO. -- The Fermi 2 nuclear power plant in Monroe County has been shut down.
DTE Energy says it took the plant offline after finding an excess of hydrogen gas in a cooling center for the main electrical generator.
An increase in hydrogen gas in the water-cooled system decreases its efficiency.
The generator is on the non-nuclear side of the plant and has two separate cooling systems for its different sections.   One uses water and the other hydrogen.

11/5/2012 S. Korea shuts down two nuclear reactors due to fake parts

Source: CCTV
Date: 1-06-2012 00:12 BJT

Video Description
South Korea has shut down two nuclear reactors after components were found to have false quality certificates.

The country’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy said the two reactors at the Yeonggwang nuclear power plant in the country’s southwest, will be closed until the end of the year, to have their parts replaced. Despite a wide use of such parts in at least two nuclear reactors, officials said there is no direct link to the safety of the nuclear reactors.

The ministry added that the parts are mostly legitimate products, that have had no problems when used in other industrial sectors. However, the parts need to be proven to be safe for use in nuclear power plants and thus require quality and safety warranties from one of 12 international organizations that have been designated by Seoul.

The shut down of the 2 reactors is expected to cause major disruptions to the country’s electricity supply. South Korea operates 23 nuclear reactors, generating about 30 percent of its total electricity.

A malfunctioning pump caused an automatic shutdown of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant Thursday, the second such event in as many months.

Plant officials and government regulators said the shutdown at the plant, where a partial meltdown of a reactor in 1979 is considered the worst commercial nuclear power plant accident in U.S history, posed no threat to public health or safety.

The shutdown occurred shortly after 2:15 p.m. ,when the failure of a coolant pump tripped the computerized system that shuts downs the reactor in the event of any safety-related problems.

(Reuters) - The U.S. government's only facility for handling, processing and storing weapons-grade uranium has been temporarily shut after anti-nuclear activists, including an 82-year-old nun, breached security fences, government officials said on Thursday.

WSI Oak Ridge, the contractor responsible for protecting the facility at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is owned by the international security firm G4S, which was at the center of a dispute over security at the London Olympic Games.

Officials said the facility was shut down on Wednesday at least until next week after three activists cut through perimeter fences to reach the outer wall of a building where highly enriched uranium, a key nuclear bomb component, is stored.

10/6/2011 Japan Test Reactor Was Shaken Beyond Design Limit in March Quake

Source: Bloomberg
Date: October 06, 2011, 1:06 AM EDT
by: Tsuyoshi Inajima

Oct. 6 (Bloomberg) -- A research reactor operated by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency was shaken beyond its design limits during the earthquake that struck in March and another of the agency’s nuclear facilities was likely damaged in the disaster.

The Japan Research Reactor No. 3 in Tokai village, 115 kilometers (71 miles) northeast of Tokyo, was shaken as much as 5.7 times more than its design allowed, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology said in a statement.

Parts of the roof of the experimental Japan Materials Testing Reactor building in the agency’s research center in Oarari, 60 kilometers from Tokyo, was damaged, possibly by the quake, the ministry said. No radiation leaks were found at either site, according to the ministry.

The magnitude-9 quake and subsequent tsunami on March 11 knocked out power and cooling at Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant, causing the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl 25 years ago.

Neither of the Japan Atomic reactors were running when the quake hit, said Kunimi Yoshida, an official involved in nuclear power regulation at the science ministry.

Tokai village was the site of an accident in 1999 at a nuclear plant operated by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co.’s unit JCO Co. Two workers were killed by radiation after pouring uranium from a bucket into a processing tank, leading to a chain reaction.

10/4/2011 Genkai No.4 nuclear reactor stops operation

Source: NHK World
Date: Tuesday, October 04, 2011 18:55 +0900 (JST)

A reactor at the Genkai nuclear power plant in western Japan was shut down automatically on Tuesday, following a technical glitch with the unit's cooling system.

Kyushu Electric Power Company, the plant's operator, says no one was hurt and there have been no changes in radiation levels monitored near the plant.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says the Number 4 reactor at the plant stopped operations at around 1:40 PM on Tuesday, after abnormalities in the steam condenser of its cooling system were signaled by equipment.

Tuesday's suspension has left the utility with only one of its 6 nuclear reactors in operation.

9/28/2011 Swiss plan to phase out use of nuclear power gains full backing in parliament

Source: Associated Press
Date: September 28, 9:54 AM

BERN, Switzerland — A government plan to phase out nuclear power in Switzerland has moved a lot closer to becoming reality. Switzerland’s upper house, the Council of States, approved a measure Wednesday as expected to gradually shut down the country’s five nuclear reactors by 2034.

The endorsement, one month before federal elections, follows similar action by the lower house in June and reflects growing global skepticism over the use of atomic energy.

The Swiss use it to provide almost 40 percent of their country’s energy, which relies largely on hydropower.

The Cabinet favors decommissioning the country’s reactors after an average life span of 50 years and must now provide lawmakers with a detailed proposal on how to do that.

9/26/2011 Another shutdown at Entergy nuclear power plant

Source: Associated Press via Bloomberg Business Week
Date: September 26, 2011, 9:29AM ET

COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich.
Entergy Corp.'s Palisades Nuclear Plant in southwestern Michigan has shut down five days after restarting from an earlier shutdown.

Entergy said the plant shut down automatically from full power about 3:10 p.m. Sunday because of an electrical breaker fault.

New Orleans-based Entergy said no one was hurt in the shutdown. Entergy said plant personnel are evaluating the problem and working toward "a repair and restoration schedule."

Palisades is in Van Buren County's Covert Township, about 55 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. It was shut down Sept. 16 because of a loss of water in a cooling system, then brought back on the grid last Tuesday.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspected the plant in August after a water pump component failed.

Editor's Note: Two shutdowns in such a short span of time is definitely concerning to say the least.

9/1/2011 Reactors restart after Irene

Source: World Nuclear News
Date: 9/1/2011

Two nuclear power reactors which were shut down as Hurricane Irene swept up the east coast of the USA have now been restarted. Exelon's single-unit Oyster Creek plant in New Jersey was taken offline on 27 August as a precaution against the approaching hurricane-force winds. The utility, having found that the reactor had not sustained any damage, announced that the 636 MWe boiling water reactor had restarted operation on 30 August. Constellation reported on 31 August that it had restarted unit 1 at its Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland. The 825 MWe pressurized water reactor shut down automatically after aluminium cladding dislodged from a nearby building hit a transformer, while the plant's second unit continued to operate safely.
