Repairs at Four Nuclear Reactors Are So Expensive That They Should Not Be Restarted

Fairewinds examines continuing problems at four US nuclear reactors, each of which have been shutdown for more than two years. Upstream dam failures continue to plague Ft. Calhoun, steam generator tube failures at San Onofre jeopardized Los Angeles. Crystal River's containment repairs burden Floridians with excessive costs. Finally, Arnie examines a new proposal by the Department of Energy to melt radioactive scrap metal and reuse it in consumer goods like knives and forks.
http://fairewinds.com/content/repairs-four-nuclear-reactors-are-so-expensive-...

Pipes are not where they should be in drawings and calculations not correct at Fort Calhoun in Missouri. Upstream dams could fail (old infrastructure) causing a cascading fail resulting in St. Ouuis being waist deep in water. More than 35 feet more water than the flood just 18 months ago causing an upstream fail flooding of BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS resulting in the loss of ultimate heat sink. The entire midwest would be in jeopardy. (an inland tsunami). Nuclear power plants are NOT designed to withstand a dam failure.

Video Description
Paul Gunter, Beyond Nuclear joins Thom Hartmann. All is not well at the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant in California - where federal investigators have found major designs flaws in the plant. Just what kind of risk do these designs flaws pose - and could we be looking at a future nuclear disaster on the West Coast? And are our fish getting more and more radioactive? Should you bring a geiger counter to the restaurant or supermarket yet?

2/7/2012 More Concerns Over San Onofre Safety

Source: San Diego Reader
Date: Posted February 7, 2012, 7:26 a.m.
by: Dave Rice

Concerns about safety and the durability of components at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station are continuing to surface as the plant approaches a full week of complete shutdown. The plant’s Unit 3 reactor was taken out of commission after a radioactive water leak was discovered on January 31, while Unit 2 was already down for scheduled maintenance. The Unit 1 reactor was taken offline permanently in 1992.

Fukushima Update, July 25 2011

US NRC Reports and the Nation’s Leaders Yawn

So, the New York Times has a retrospective on the political fallout from Fukushima.  In it, it repeats a clearly mistaken evaluation of causality:
The odds are remote that this country will confront a similarly powerful earthquake followed by an even more destructive tsunami — the twin blows that disabled Fukushima.

7/16/2011 'Unusual Event' Reported At San Onofre Plant

Source: Associated Press via San Franciso Chronicle
Date: 7/16/2011 16:31 PDT

(07-16) 16:31 PDT SAN ONOFRE, Calif. (AP) --

Utility officials say one of several redundant security systems used to monitor the grounds of Southern California's San Onofre nuclear plant stopped working for 45 minutes, triggering a declaration of the lowest level of emergency.

Gil Alexander, a spokesman for the plant's operator, Southern California Edison, said an "unusual event" was declared at 6:12 a.m.

Although the security system was restored within 45 minutes, the Orange County plant remained on unusual event status until 9:50 a.m.

Alexander said the failure was not related to nuclear operations and no part of the plant's perimeter was left unguarded.

Edison did not release details of the incident or say what kind of equipment was involved.

Officials were still trying to determine the cause of the failure Saturday afternoon.

Alexander said the unusual event declaration required immediate notification of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Editor's Note: The emergency has been cleared and the nuclear power plant is back in a non-emergency condition. Quoting the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) event notification report:
