A new business model called the "social fund" is giving hope to
businesses in the areas afflicted by the March earthquake and tsunami.
The approach allows anyone who wants to help a organization revive
itself get the process going by contributing funds. As little as 10,000
yen ($130) is acceptable.
More than 40,000 small and midsize firms in
the three hardest-hit prefectures are thought to have suffered damage.
Many of them have been unable to take out new bank loans because of
existing debts for previous purchases. The "social fund" could be their
last resort.

10/1/2011 Decontamination efforts accelerate in Fukushima

Municipalities in Fukushima Prefecture affected by the nuclear accident in March are stepping up efforts to decontaminate public buildings and restore key infrastructures.
The move comes after the Japanese government lifted an evacuation advisory on Friday for 5 municipalities located between 20 and 30 kilometers from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
After the March 11th disaster, residents in these municipalities were advised to prepare to evacuate in case of an emergency at the nuclear plant.
The city of Minamisoma has placed priority on removing radioactive substances from public facilities such as parks, schools and roads.
Contractors are replacing surface soil with uncontaminated soil. But they say it's becoming difficult to procure the necessary amount of soil due to increasing demand.
In Kawauchi Village, residents have begun to patrol the community against burglaries. It is feared that the cancellation of the government advisory could make it easier for burglars to prey on the community.
The central government has yet to come up with concrete measures, including financial assistance, to support the municipalities' restoration efforts.

3/23/2011 Nuclear Illinois Helped Shape Obama View on Energy in Dealings With Exelon

If Illinois were a country, it would have the world’s 12th-largest number of nuclear power reactors, behind China and ahead of Sweden.
No other U.S. state generates more energy through fission. Exelon Corp. (EXC), which operates all 11 of the state’s reactors, is no stranger to President Barack Obama. 9/29/2011 Fukushima prefecture struck by major tremor
Source: NHK World
Date: Thursday, September 29, 2011 20:07 +0900 (JST)
An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.4 jolted Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on Thursday.
The Meteorological Agency says the tremor occurred shortly after 7 PM, centered off Fukushima Prefecture.
The agency says there was no tsunami.
The quake registered a maximum intensity of 5-plus on the Japanese scale of zero to 7.
Tokyo Electric Power Company says the quake has not interfered with its attempts to stabilize three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, crippled since the nuclear crisis began in March.
The utility adds that no changes have been observed in data on radiation levels measured at monitoring posts near the crippled plant.
Editor's Note: This quake was downgraded to a Magnitude 5.1 by the USGS.

9/28/2011 Swiss plan to phase out use of nuclear power gains full backing in parliament
Source: Associated Press
Date: September 28, 9:54 AM
BERN, Switzerland — A government plan to phase out nuclear power in Switzerland has moved a lot closer to becoming reality. Switzerland’s upper house, the Council of States, approved a measure Wednesday as expected to gradually shut down the country’s five nuclear reactors by 2034.
The endorsement, one month before federal elections, follows similar action by the lower house in June and reflects growing global skepticism over the use of atomic energy.
The Swiss use it to provide almost 40 percent of their country’s energy, which relies largely on hydropower.
The Cabinet favors decommissioning the country’s reactors after an average life span of 50 years and must now provide lawmakers with a detailed proposal on how to do that.

9/26/2011 Another shutdown at Entergy nuclear power plant
Source: Associated Press via Bloomberg Business Week
Date: September 26, 2011, 9:29AM ET
COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich.
Entergy Corp.'s Palisades Nuclear Plant in southwestern Michigan has shut down five days after restarting from an earlier shutdown.
Entergy said the plant shut down automatically from full power about 3:10 p.m. Sunday because of an electrical breaker fault.
New Orleans-based Entergy said no one was hurt in the shutdown. Entergy said plant personnel are evaluating the problem and working toward "a repair and restoration schedule."
Palisades is in Van Buren County's Covert Township, about 55 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. It was shut down Sept. 16 because of a loss of water in a cooling system, then brought back on the grid last Tuesday.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspected the plant in August after a water pump component failed.
Editor's Note: Two shutdowns in such a short span of time is definitely concerning to say the least.
