Tokyo Slammed with Radiation

We noted in August that some parts of Tokyo have more radiation than existed in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zones. And see this and this.

There are indications that radiation levels are increasing in Tokyo.

Nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen took 5 random soil samples in Tokyo recently, and found that all 5 were so radioactive that they would be considered radioactive waste in the United States, which would have to be specially disposed of at a facility in Texas:

While traveling in Japan several weeks ago, Fairewinds’ Arnie Gundersen took soil samples in Tokyo public parks, playgrounds, and rooftop gardens.

All the samples would be considered nuclear waste if found here in the US. This level of contamination is currently being discovered throughout Japan.

At the US NRC Regulatory Information Conference in Washington, DC March 13 to March 15, the NRC's Chairman, Dr. Gregory Jaczko emphasized his concern that the NRC and the nuclear industry presently do not consider the costs of mass evacuations and radioactive contamination in their cost benefit analysis used to license nuclear power plants.

Furthermore, Fairewinds believes that evacuation costs near a US nuclear plant could easily exceed one trillion dollars and contaminated land would be uninhabitable for generations.

Indeed, shortly after the earthquake, U.S. government officials noted widespread contamination throughout northern Japan, including Tokyo, and said:

Entire region would be required to be posted as radiological area.

No wonder the potential evacuation of Tokyo has been quietly discussed by Japanese officials ever since the earthquake hit.

This means my test @ 110CPM = 1 uS/v per hour. Which means 24 uS/v per day ....

24 uS/v per day X 365 days in a year = 8,760 uS/v per year !!! That is roughly 8.5 mS/v per year -- which equals about spending over an hour at chernobyl !! (that is per the PBS site below). We are coming up on one year from Fukushima -- if these levels continue it means we ALL spent over an hour at chernobyl if the levels carry on for a full year !!!!!

I have done subsequent measurements OUTSIDE in the snow directly -- 73.8 CPM over 10 Minutes.. and another test at approx. 62CPM.

In total.. three tests.. 110CPM, 62CPM, and 74CPM. These are HIGH levels..

100CPM is alert level.. so the first count actually falls under "ALERT level".. second two readings fall in the "HIGH" category.

Past baseline measurements in the same spot were an average of 20-30CPM.

I am now (500pm CST) collecting snow for several hours -- will melt the snow -- and take tests -- also will EVAPORATE the snow and take readings on the residue.

Again.. a straight test returns a VERY high reading @ 110CPM -- these are just the preliminary tests -- I cannot leave the equipment outside in the snow for 10 minutes -- thus we must collect the sample and do extended testing.

I will be using all three geiger counters on the full tests -- once I have enough direct snowfall in the collection glass. Coming ASAP ! Tonight into tomorrow AM (2/14) -- each test takes 10 min + video processing and upload time. Will do three tests at least.

10/12/2011 The major news this week is the Strontium-90 found in Yokohama, which is even further from Fukushima I than Tokyo

There are many corroborating sources regarding deadly radionuclides or high levels of radiation being found far from the 20 km exclusion zone around Fukushima I. Bloggers, CNN, ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) and Kyodo News (amongst others) have confirmed that Strontium-90 has indeed been found in Yokohama, which is South of Tokyo and even further away than the major city from the melted down Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The apartment rooftop where the Stontium-90 was found is 155 miles (250 km) away from Fukushima I. This indicates that dangerous radioactive contamination is more far reaching than originally thought.  Note that the testing was done by a private testing lab, not the government.

Japanese video journalist Toshi Maeda gives Dateline an insider’s view of the daily challenges still facing residents, including his own wife and young daughter.

Near the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, he finds ghost towns, where those remaining struggle with little work, money or food. Close-knit families have been left divided by the disaster as members move elsewhere to try and make a living.

One family that Toshi meets, the Sakuuchis, also don't know how the radiation, at 14 times the normal level, will ultimately affect them and the youngest member of their family, four-year-old Honoka.

Contamination concerns too are affecting agricultural businesses hundreds of kilometres away, and even daily food shopping in Tokyo has become an ordeal… all with a backdrop of discontent over a lack of government transparency and action.

Seen in this video is a gamma spectrum, performed with a high-purity germanium detector.  In a 50 grams sample of soil (drain / gutter of streets) from the sagamihara area west of tokio (250 km from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant), significant amounts of the synthetic cesium isotopes Cs-137 and Cs-134 were found.  These manmade isotopes are from Fukushima, unless there was another, yet unknown incident, meaning the contamination spread quite far.

8/24/2011 Japan Triples Airborne Radiation Checks as ‘Hot Spots’ Spread

Japan will more than triple the number of regions it checks for airborne radiation as more contaminated “hot spots” are discovered far from Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s crippled Fukushima nuclear power station.

The government said it will increase radiation monitoring by helicopter to 22 prefectures from the six closest to the plant, which began spewing radiation after an earthquake and tsunami struck the station in March. The plan comes after radioactive waste more than double the regulatory limit was found 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the plant this week.

Authorities have refused to give a cumulative figure for radiation released from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant after estimating in June that fallout in the six days following the quake was equal to 15 percent of total radiation released in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. The authorities have been too slow to widen airborne radiation testing, said Tetsuo Ito, the head of Kinki University’s Atomic Energy Research Institute in Osaka.

“The government should have expanded the monitoring area by helicopters much earlier to ease concerns among the public,” Ito said in a telephone interview yesterday.

Officials on Aug. 12 found compost in a kindergarten yard in Tokamachi city, Niigata prefecture containing radioactive cesium measuring 27,000 becquerels per kilogram, Kenichiro Kasuga, an official at the city’s disaster prevention department, said by phone.

Much has been written about the probable effects on renewable energy of the budget deal struck between President Obama and Congressional Republicans last week.

Solar panels and windmills, boosted by a massive influx of funding from the Stimulus Package in 2009, will see subsidies dry up when they expire in 2012. But wind and solar won’t be the only casualties in the Energy Department.

The nation’s only Low-Dose Radiation Research program is likely to suffer a severe cut in funding not long after the United States was blanketed with low doses of radioactive fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.

A man from Tokyo went to Hokkaido for sightseeing.
He had a whole body counter check to see if he’s taken radioactive particles into his body.

The result was “positive”.

Cesium137 ; 868bq
Cesium134 ; 6373bq

The doctor asked him if he went to Fukushima,he replied no.

He normally spent days in Tokyo.

Now it’s pretty rational to think most of the other people are equally dosed.

The doctor added,
There are too little sample of low dose symptoms,so even if you have cancer in the future,
maybe it’s hard to prove it has something to do with Fukushima.

This is how “our” government is going to abandon us.

8/1/2011 Govt to check rice for radiation

Japan's government is to ask rice-producing regions to check their crops for radiation before and after harvest.

The government plans to provide local authorities with details of the tests this week. The tests are designed to ensure that rice on the market will be free of radioactive cesium believed to come from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The government says it will suspend rice shipments if levels of cesium exceeding the safety limit are detected.

All 6 prefectures in the Tohoku region, northern Japan, have decided to test their rice for radiation.

Tokyo and 12 other prefectures also say they will carry out or consider radiation checks.

Radioactive cesium has been detected in rice straw, vegetables and compost in wide areas following the accident at the Fukushima plant.

Farmers have voiced concern that their rice may be contaminated, because it was planted after the accident.

Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo will start tests soon, as the region's harvest begins in early August.

Retailers and consumers are inundating a private institute testing various items for radioactive materials to confirm the safety of beef products amid reports that cattle exposed to cesium were shipped nationwide, institute officials said.

Isotope Research Institute Inc., which is based in Yokohama, said it has received more than 150 inquiries including by phone and dozens of beef samples from all over the country since high levels of radioactive cesium were detected July 11 in straw fed to cattle at a farm in Fukushima Prefecture.

Further testing will be done on the soil sample at a second lab, for other radionuclides.

Also, the above video illustrates that when placing a personal dosimeter (Geiger counter) right on the ground in Kashiwa, which is 23 km from the center of Tokyo, the measurement is astonishingly high showing a peak of 6.59 μSv/hr (microsieverts/hour). For reference, there is only one personal dosimeter shared on Ustream (that I could find), which consistently shows values in whole numbered μSv/hr. This is the GM-fukushima Geiger counter, which normally displays the outdoors levels of an open air cafe in Iitate Village, Fukushima Prefecture.  This is the closest Geiger counter in the Live Streaming Radiation Meters collection to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

On March 11th 2011 I was happily working on a portrait of two darling young sisters, when the earth shook in Japan. I put down my brushes, and went to the computer to investigate. I haven’t been back to my portrait, yet. The Jaws of Fukushima had me. The media kept concentrating on the earthquake and Tsunami, saying very little on the condition of their reactors at several nuclear plants. It soon became apparent that the reactor:”Fukushima 1”, was in the most trouble.

The 4 explosions at the reactors and spent fuel pools came next, but we have only been shown film of reactors number 1 and number 3 exploding. Film of explosions at reactors number 2 and 4 have never been released to us “the public”. There have been problems with reactors 5 and 6, but the state of danger is unreleased. We stocked up on food, water and other supplies.

6/28/2011 Driggs, Idaho Ustream Geiger counter spikes as high as 140 CPM

This is somewhat disturbing. I noticed that the Driggs, Idaho Ustream meter, which can be observed in real time by clicking the "USA" link on the navigation bar at the top, has spiked up to as high as 140 CPM (counts per minute).  Per the Geiger counter owner, normal background radiation is 20 CPM. 140 CPM is thus 7x background, although 140 is an extreme and not average sampling value.  On the CerebralProgrammer Ustream site for this Geiger counter notes included:

A few days ago on June 24, 2011 I captured another 2 minute or so sampling at around midnight showing a CPM from the same meter as high as 100 CPM.

The closest EPA RadNet monitoring site to Driggs, Idaho is in Idaho Falls, Idaho which is 49 miles away in a straight line per the graphic below:

The EPA RadNet monitoring station is 40 miles East of Idaho National Lab, which is one of the nation's first nuclear test sites.  Plutonium contaminated nuclear waste from nuclear weapons manufacture is stored on the grounds. Activist groups have long battled for cleanup of nuclear waste at the facility, siting that much of it sits on top of the Snake River Aquifer. Radioactive waste is shipped in to Idaho National Lab from other facilities for treatment and storage.

The EPA gross gamma and beta counts do not really show any unusual spikes in recent activity if examining the RadNet monitoring station data from Idaho Falls:

Note:  I can not personally vouch for this, but activist Alexander Higgins, who writes a popular blog, claims that the EPA re-calibrated their RadNet monitoring stations to understate radioactive fallout coming from Fukushima Daiichi.  The article he wrote is titled Confirmed: EPA Rigged RADNET Japan Nuclear Radiation Monitoring Equipment To Report Lower Levels Of Fukushima Fallout.

If there (hypothetically) is recent unusually high radioactive fallout blowing in to Driggs, Idaho from the Idaho National Lab nuclear waste dump(s) you would expect the EPA air monitoring station to pick up on it since Idaho Falls is only half the distance to INL as Driggs (where CerebralProgrammer's Geiger counter is located) is to INL (see previous geographic map).

Also the wind is not blowing due East, but rather the most recent wind forecast I obtained shows the wind is blowing primarily from South to North, with a slight Northeast angle:

If the elevated radiation reading shown at Driggs, Idaho really is coming from Fukushima (as one would naturally expect), for example, this would require a detailed isotope analysis by a nuclear expert to prove it really is from Fukushima. Unfortunately, in May the EPA discontinued much of its testing of radioactive isotopes as per OpEd News:

The EPA announced in early May that it would cease testing air, rainwater, tap water and milk, as iodine 131 levels, the isotope with the shortest half-life, had fallen to normal atmospheric levels (EPA test results here). It has been reported at several websites that both NILU and the EPA were pressured to discontinue testing -- or at least to discontinue publication of the test results. The "pressure" has been variously attributed to the U.S. government, the Japanese government and the United Nations, although I have seen no hard evidence to substantiate any of those claims.[1]

There is a petition started by Lucas Whitefield Hixson which requests that the President, Congress and EPA reinstate the radioactive isotope testing as mentioned above. If you have not signed it already, the petition is available here.
