If radioactive snow is falling in Missouri, is it safe to assume that
much of the snow that is falling on the rest of the country is also
radioactive? What you are about to see is absolutely shocking. A
highly respected YouTube personality known as DutchSinse has released
video of himself measuring radiation levels of the snow falling on St.
Louis, Missouri. What he discovered was that he got a reading that was about twice as high
as he did on a sunny day when there is no precipitation. So what in
the world could be causing this? Could Fukushima be to blame? Is
radioactive water originally from Fukushima being picked up in the
Pacific and dumped all across the country? If so, there would seem to
be no way to stop this from happening. Now that highly radioactive
water from Fukushima is spreading throughout the entire Pacific Ocean,
it is simply impossible to put the “genie back in the bottle” again.
So could this mean that we might have to deal with radioactive rain and
snow storms in North America for many years to come?
...

10/24/2012 115 CPM reading from Frederick, WI on Radiation Network
Source: Nokaoi Traverse (from Facebook Radiation Watch group)
Date: 10/24/2012 9:30 PM CST (approximate)
Editor's Note: A second Geiger Counter up North in the general area as the Grand Rapids, Minnesota meter from Radiation Network with high readings decreases the probability that the Grand Rapids meter (which is offline as of this moment) 100+CPM alert level reading was a fluke. Note that the Frederic, WI meter has technically exceeded the alerting level but has not shown up in the alerts section of Radiation Network (yet).

RadiationNetwork shows 110 CPM in Grand Rapids, Minnesota
Source: RadiationNetwork.com
Date: 10/22/2012
Here is a copy and paste the Alerts section of RadiationNetwork.com:
Update: 10/22/12,
5:00 P.M. - Radiation Alert in Minnesota
The Radiation Network has a contributing Monitoring Station located in Grand Rapids, Minnesota that is triggering Radiation Alerts as I write this, since about 1:00 P.M. local time. Until we receive feedback from the station operator, we have no reason to believe this is not a genuine detection of elevated radiation levels, and so as with our policy, this will be allowed to play out for the time being.
The graph shows steadily rising radiation from a normal background level of about 40 CPM, eventually exceeding the 100 CPM alert level on our network. We know Grand Rapids operates the PRM-9000 Geiger counter which is built around the same ultra-sensitive pancake style Geiger-Mueller tube as in the Inspector line of instruments. Without yet knowing the source or nature of the Grand Rapids radiation, I can say that particular model of GM tube has demonstrated at other times and across other monitoring stations how sensitive it is to passing radioactive weather patterns, even from an indoor monitoring posture. When we obtain more information, we will provide a follow-up report.
For future posterity, here is a video by MissingSky101 of the high reading:

7/22/2012 Fukushima contractor forced workers to fake radiation readings — RT
Source: Russia Today
Date: 22 July, 2012, 01:32
A company charged with decontaminating the devastated Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant encouraged its workers to falsely lower their radiation dosimeter readings by covering the devices with lead, according to a leaked tape of an internal meeting.
Nuclear plant workers are not allowed to be exposed to more than 50 millisieverts of radiation a year. But managers at Build-up, a company that provided insulation on the pipes that would pump irradiated water out of the plant, believed that doses experienced inside the plant, which suffered a meltdown, meant workers would quickly reach their limit.

7/2/2012 i am radioactive! or: my PET/CT scan - F-18 DOPA (fluorodopa)
Source: bionerd23
Date: 7/2/2012
Editor's Note: I was a bit shocked when I saw this video, poor lady allowed herself to be turned in to a human guinea pig. ;'(
Video Description
my brain is now running on radioactive dopamine...
i was injected with 200 MBq F-18, a radioactive isotope of fluorine, in the chemical form F-18-DOPA.
200 MBq means 200 million decays, resulting in 400 million gamma rays (annihilation photons) every SECOND.
this again resulted in an acute dose of about 5 mSv (including the 0.5 mSv CT scan prior to the PET scan) to me.
this was a scientific study (ethics-commission approved) to study the mechanisms of learning.
studies like this are performed on healthy test subjects on a daily basis.
i'm curious to hear your opinion on the matter...
but anyway, i am not ill, i am a healthy test subject...
or: my PET CAT is chasing the radioactive LAB RAT! =)

6/22/2012 85.03 μSv/h Mud in Fukushima City
Source: Birdhairjp

On 23 June 2012, I measured radiation at a riverside of WATARASE river in Fukushima city of Fukushima prefecture, Japan.
The monitoring point is central area of Fukushima city, near the bridge of national road route 4 across the river, only 200m for Fukushima prefectural government office, and 55km from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear power plant.
There are rain water drainage ditchs into ABUKUMA river from "WATARI", a housing area of Fukushima city.
I monitored 0.45 micro Sievert per hour in air at my breast hight of the river water's edge.
15.70 in air at 100cm high near mud of the drainage ditch, 85.03 micro Sievert per hour on the mud. It is said that "WATARI" area is one of the hotest spot of Fukushima city center area.
Measuring instrument is made of Ukraine, ECOTEST MKS-05.
Population of Fukushima city : 290,000.

6/15/2012 Radiation Network Alerts Show They are POSITIVE South Bend, IN was a FALSE Detection
Source: RadiationNetwork Alerts
Date: 6/15/2012
I was checking the Radiation Network crowd-sourced national Geiger counter readings map and noticed that they had an update for the extraordinarily high South Bend, Indiana reading from 6/6/2012. This did raise the alarm bell in the blogosphere. Apparently the same Geiger counter station has now been confirmed to be hooked up to both Radiation Network and Black Cat Systems. Therefore there was no second station in the area confirming the high reading as some speculated (it was the same station). Below is the Radiation Network alert which I have cut and pasted with the details:

Below is the Radiation Network alert which I have cut and pasted with the details:
[...]For the older reports of the South Bend, Indiana reading see:
Postscript: 6/16/12, 10:50 A.M: - Radiation Alert from Indiana
You may notice that the South Bend, Indiana station that triggered the high Alert on June 6th is back online. He plans to operate his station only while he is there to attend it, and has taken interim steps to improve the integrity of his system until he can build a dedicated setup just for the purpose of this radiation monitoring. A few new facts:
I myself have limited knowledge in electronics, but this station operator is very experienced, and putting all of the above facts together, along with the makeup of his system, which involved a series of UPS backups in combination with GFCI outlet and serial connections, his best judgment is that a ground loop had developed and triggered the high radiation levels showing on the softwares that fed the radiation networks - a fluke in his particular hardware combination.
There was no lightning storm at his location that evening. Confirmed that his monitoring station was feeding both the RadiationNetwork and the Black Cat Systems network simultaneously, using Virtual Serial Port Emulation software, which means there was no corroborating reading at the identical location from a different system, because the Black Cat reading was from the same Geiger counter. As stated before, the Black Cat system uses a different unit of radiation measurement, and there is also a lag time built into their reporting. Even though the RadiationNetwork had disabled his connection, the operator's station continued to run locally, and he found after awakening that the Geiger counter itself was showing normal readings as indicated by the occasional frequency of its blinking red light! It was the computer and software only that were registering high radiation levels. The Geiger counter was being supplied by A/C, not battery power, and it is the station operator's strong opinion that had the counter been running on a battery during the time of the incident, the alert would never have occurred.
In conclusion, the station operator has worked diligently in troubleshooting the problem, and has taken interim and permanent steps to build strong integrity into his monitoring system. He has been fully cooperative and responsive since the alert, and he has my full support. He wishes to reiterate his deep apology for the concern his false alert caused.
For our part, we at the Radiation Network need a faster reacting system to end false alerts sooner, but only after we have reasonably determined that the alert is in fact false. The genuine alerts stay - in keeping with our function as an early warning system.
One final note: Some media reports of this incident seemingly confused these two:
Big difference in many ways. You might review my assessment of "Radiation Monitoring by Government vs. Private Citizen", the 3/29/11 Update from the Archive2 page linked above.
Radiation Network - that's us, a privately owned and operated, citizen-based monitoring system, versus... RadNet, a Federal Government radiation monitoring system operated by the EPA.

6/7/2012 The 7000 CPM reading from South Bend, Indiana was a FALSE alert
Source: radiationnetwork.com
Date: 6/7/2012 7:45 AM
As per the Alert section in radiationnetwork.com the 7000 CPM reading from South Bend, Indiana was probably due to equipment failure and has been flagged as false with an apology:
Following is the original article with the alert where it is not known if the reading is legitimate or not: 6/7/2012 High Geiger counter readings from South Bend, Indiana 7000CPM highest.

Date: 6/7/2012 7:45 AM
As per the Alert section in radiationnetwork.com the 7000 CPM reading from South Bend, Indiana was probably due to equipment failure and has been flagged as false with an apology:
Also note from the highlight above that some of the Geiger counters in radiationnetwork.com also feed in to blackcatsystems.com.
Update: 6/7/12, 7:45 A.M: - False Alert: The alert level reading last evening appears to be a false alert from an equipment malfunction. Here is the station's report:
"out of control readings on the GeigerGraph screen from about 11:30pm local time that occurred while sleeping. My apologies to all. I have no idea what caused this. Shut down GeigerGraph and restarted. Readings from the Geiger were in the normal range (the Geiger operates on A/C). All cable connections are tight and not loose. Am speculating between the GFI and USB Adapter and some sort of voltage spikes. The uninterruptable power supply UPS had lost power and had died - a tripped GFI. I am not going to leave the system running while not at home until I can determine and fix the problem."
By the way, a handful of stations on the Radiation Network feed simultaneously to the Black Cat Systems network, which explains why a high reading was showing on their network at the same time. But Black Cat works in uR/hr instead of CPM, so their radiation level was lower because of the conversion factor between units of measurement.
Update: 6/6/12, 11:55 P.M. - Very high reading in South Bend, IN station this evening. Reason unknown. Station unresponsive to contact at this late hour. Since this same station has triggered the Alert system before, which Alerts may have been false, and because his current readings do not appear to be corroborated by nearby stations, we have disabled his station for the time being. Will report back when we know more.

At time of upload station is reading 7,000 cpm again 1:10 am.
@2:00 am numbers dropped to normal and then went up to 300's...Black Cat is reading hign too in tandem...if this IS a plume this is not from Fuku, it would have set off other detectors west of there from the wind direction in the days prior. This is either a malfunction, or this is a local plant or local event. My next guess would be check military installations in area for activity as well. It should start setting off detectors south/southeast in the next few hours, if its real. I will be calling the NRC back in the a.m. There are several other nuke plants N/NW/W that need to be checked too if it continues.
Anyone local with a geiger please post readings.

2/13/2012 ☢ Alert ! 110 CPM in the SNOW - St. Louis, Missouri ☢ AVOID EXPOSURE ☢

Description:
update 950pm CST 2/13/2012 --
convert CPM to uS/v or mS/v here: http://www.blackcatsystems.com/GM/converting_CPM_mRhr.html
quote:
"For those who prefer to use Sieverts, 108 CPM is about 1 uSv/hr for C060, and for Cs137 it is around 120 CPM per 1 uSv/hr. "
This means my test @ 110CPM = 1 uS/v per hour. Which means 24 uS/v per day ....
24 uS/v per day X 365 days in a year = 8,760 uS/v per year !!! That is roughly 8.5 mS/v per year -- which equals about spending over an hour at chernobyl !! (that is per the PBS site below). We are coming up on one year from Fukushima -- if these levels continue it means we ALL spent over an hour at chernobyl if the levels carry on for a full year !!!!!
thats the rough math --- this is NOT good news.
how much radiation is too much? here is a chart to see:
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/the-daily-need/how-m...
I have done subsequent measurements OUTSIDE in the snow directly -- 73.8 CPM over 10 Minutes.. and another test at approx. 62CPM.
In total.. three tests.. 110CPM, 62CPM, and 74CPM. These are HIGH levels..
100CPM is alert level.. so the first count actually falls under "ALERT level".. second two readings fall in the "HIGH" category.
Past baseline measurements in the same spot were an average of 20-30CPM.
---
I am now (500pm CST) collecting snow for several hours -- will melt the snow -- and take tests -- also will EVAPORATE the snow and take readings on the residue.
Again.. a straight test returns a VERY high reading @ 110CPM -- these are just the preliminary tests -- I cannot leave the equipment outside in the snow for 10 minutes -- thus we must collect the sample and do extended testing.
I will be using all three geiger counters on the full tests -- once I have enough direct snowfall in the collection glass. Coming ASAP ! Tonight into tomorrow AM (2/14) -- each test takes 10 min + video processing and upload time. Will do three tests at least.

2/9/2012 (Video) Many brands of smoke detectors are radioactive

Description:
Feb 9th. I happened to catch a video on radiation amounts, in smoke
detectors being higher than the public is lead to believe. So I thought I
would check ours. I was as surprised as you will be by the numbers, and
these emmit constantly in our homes. This isn't right. These should not
be sold and yet they are approved by our protection agencies.
The next part I'm a little sketchy on so feel free to correct me in the comments. I'm not a science guy.
On a suggestion from a friend I re-tested the smoke alarm with a folded piece of paper between my geiger and the smoke detector. This is because Alpha rays can be blocked out by a piece of paper. My geiger read 0.35 micro-sieverts with the paper in between. Next I put a piece of 20 gauge steel in between. First I checked the steel { 0.13 micro-sieverts = normal background} Then I put the steel in between the geiger and detector. {0.30 micro-sieverts} This 0,30 micro-sieverts would have to be beta or gamma. If you know...pass it on....below.
Sorry I couldn't film all 3 tests but the info is all here. I don't have to be a genius to realize these smoke alarms are poison. I have read that there are non-radioactive smoke detectors so if you must have one, make sure it's not one of these jobs. The store manager will be getting a visit and I will bring my geiger. Four times background is ridiculous. Also there seems to be no plan anywhere {NRC included} to dispose of these properly. They either go into landfills or get incinerated, and I read that the nasty stuff {Americum} in them, has a half-life of 450 years. Consider this a "Heads up" These should have a big skull and crossbones on the package.

Update: 1/19/12, 11:30 A.M. - Radiation Alert from Taos
On January 18th, at about 5:48 PM local time, the Nokaoi station in the Taos area of New Mexico broadcast a Radiation Alert over the Network. See the graph at right, depicting elevated readings averaging over 100 CPM (Counts per Minute) for a sustained period of about 20 minutes, then subsiding to near normal background levels of about 60 to 70 CPM.
For context, the station is operating the Inspector Geiger counter, which is a high count rate model built around an ultra-sensitive pancake style Geiger- Mueller tube. Between that high count rate, and the high elevation of Taos at 7,300 feet, their background count of about 60 CPM is therefore considered normal.
During the alert period, the station reports they were monitoring indoors on the second floor of an adobe structure, with the instrument sitting on the bed, monitoring the environment only - no specific materials were being scanned at the time. A few minutes of outdoor monitoring preceded the graphed activity shown above, which readings were also elevated. It was neither raining nor snowing at the time, and the wind was still, against relatively clear skies, although the station reported a "heavy orange cloud" on the western horizon at dusk, reminiscent of an LA sunset that is color enhanced by smog.
So what was the cause? In short, we don't know, but the fact that the elevated radiation levels were sustained for many minutes, versus a momentary spike, and then fell back to normal levels, tends to rule out a false alert that our network occasionally generates from an instrument glitch or the like. A jet stream map from last evening located the flow too far north to be a factor, its southern edge dipping down only as far as Colorado. Did the orange cloud somehow relate to the elevated radiation levels? Was there a passing radioactive "plume" from Japan? Or perhaps a downwind release from Los Alamos National Lab to the west? These are speculative questions only. A greater number of Monitoring Stations would provide a chance to corroborate readings, so that must be the continuing mission of the Radiation Network.

12/18/2011 A $5 App Turns Your Smart Phone Camera Into a RADIATION DETECTOR
Source: Pissin' On the Roses
Date: 12/18/2011
We stumbled across the smart phone apps as we were investigating what looks like the latest inncident of TEPCO adding Nalgene radiation shields to their cameras to block/reduce the very affect that the "Radioactivity Counter Rolf-Dieter Klein" leverages to use your smartphone camera as a radiation detector.
The App costs $4.99 and you can find it here; The POTRBLOG team has not tried the APP, nor are we in any way affiliated with it; but it does look interesting. The FAQ on the APP may be found HERE
Below are some videos of the work that went into the application.

Editor's Note: Per jsnip4 reverse osmosis water filtration systems help remove hot particles. He has some good silver (physical) investment videos as well. Using his Digalert+ meter, jsnip4 measured his air filters in his house and found them to be 4-5x the normal background radiation.
Startling: If you scroll forwards to 12:40 or view the video below, a concerned mother says her daughter was caught in a rainstorm and got a radiation burn and mysterious flu-like symptoms. Unconfirmed but something worth investigating. Here is the original source video which jsnip4 embedded in his own:
