9/7/2011 (Video) Hartmann with Dr. Helen Caldicott - Should NW Japan be Evacuated?
Source: RT News

by: Thom Hartman
Dr. Helen Caldicott, The Helen Caldicott Foundation/NuclearFreePlanet.org joins Thom from Australia. We're now nearly six month removed from the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in Japan that triggered a global nuclear catastrophe. And while some progress has been made to deal with this never-before-seen nuclear crisis - there's still a long way to go - lots of questions still unanswered - and enormous risk still blanketing the nation of Japan. So much so - that world renowned physician and anti-nuclear advocate Dr. Helen Caldicott recently issued a dire warning to the Japanese people. Not buying into the Japanese government's efforts to downplay the crisis - Dr. Caldicott warned people living in North Japan and around the crippled Fukushima reactors to get the hell out of the area.

9/8/2011 Blackout shuts down San Onofre nuclear reactors
Source: Los Angeles Times
Date: September 8, 2011 5:03 pm

The blackout affecting large swaths of San Diego County led to a shutdown of two reactors at the San Onofre nuclear power plant.

Editor's Note: This is the nuclear power plant 60 miles Southeast of Los Angeles where there was a recent 4.2 magnitude earthquake. Every time there is a fast unexpected shutdown, or "SCRAM" it degrades the integrity of the reactor core somewhat. This of course is not a good thing. See the excellent article "Earthquakes, Hurricanes Highlight Serious Regulation Flaws" for more details on this.

9/2/2011 Earthquake risk to nuclear reactors greater than thought

by: Dina Cappiello and Jeff Donn
WASHINGTON (AP) — The risk that an earthquake would cause a severe accident at a U.S. nuclear plant is greater than previously thought, 24 times as high in one case, according to an AP analysis of preliminary government data. The nation’s nuclear regulator believes a quarter of America’s reactors may need modifications to make them safer.

9/1/2011 Reactors restart after Irene
Source: World Nuclear News
Date: 9/1/2011
Two nuclear power reactors which were shut down as Hurricane Irene swept up the east coast of the USA have now been restarted. Exelon's single-unit Oyster Creek plant in New Jersey was taken offline on 27 August as a precaution against the approaching hurricane-force winds. The utility, having found that the reactor had not sustained any damage, announced that the 636 MWe boiling water reactor had restarted operation on 30 August. Constellation reported on 31 August that it had restarted unit 1 at its Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland. The 825 MWe pressurized water reactor shut down automatically after aluminium cladding dislodged from a nearby building hit a transformer, while the plant's second unit continued to operate safely.

8/31/2011 FACTBOX-US nuclear facilities back in restart after Irene
Source: Reuters
Date: Wed Aug 31, 2011 3:27pm GMT
Aug 31 (Reuters) - The following lists nuclear power plants in the path of Hurricane Irene and
their status as of early Wednesday.
Some plants remained fully operational through the storm, while a few were shut or reduced power in advance of expected major storm surge.
In Maryland, Constellation Energy Nuclear Group's Calvert Cliffs 1 facility remained shut offline after a transformer was hit by a section of aluminum siding during the storm.
The North Anna nuclear plant in Virginia remains shut following last week's earthquake in the region. The plant cannot be restarted until the operator can show no functional damage occurred to equipment needed for safe operation. [ID:nN1E77S184]

While everybody has been focused on hurricane Irene, the 5.8 scale earthquake that massaged the East Coast has fallen into the public’s rear-view mirror. The public had best do a quick head swivel, however, and pay attention to this odd little geological event. It was not just a bit of rock and roll that cracked the facade of the Washington Monument (insert pithy and wry observation about the metaphoric meaning of that here), it provided a wake-up call, a good tug at the bed sheets, for our sleepy nuclear watchdogs.
