New problems came to light late this week at the shuttered San Onofre nuclear plant, including coolant found in the oil system of a backup generator and a record-keeping error stretching back to 1985.
New problems came to light late this week at the shuttered San Onofre nuclear plant, including coolant found in the oil system of a backup generator and a record-keeping error stretching back to 1985.
None of the problems posed a danger to plant workers or the public, plant operator Southern California Edison and a Nuclear Regulatory spokesman said Friday....

Editor's Note: For an augmented analysis of the above situation, I have embedded an interview with nuclear engineer Arnie Gunderson, whistle-blower and former high level executive in the nuclear industry below.
Arnie Gundersen explains November 11, 2012: Possible Sabotage at Southern California Nuclear Plant
Yet more problems for San Onofre: According to Southern California Edison, a possible case of sabotage at the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant is being investigated. Gundersen and Hurley discuss how coolant liquid at the plant may have found its way into an unrelated system and threatened the backup power supply. - San Onofre has a long history of employee concerns, and recent layoffs may have exacerbated their employee problems. - The nation's oldest running Nuclear Plant, Oyster Creek, may remain shut down for longer than expected following the discovery of a crack in the reactor head. - The NRC to back a new study which will re-evaluate earthquake risks and probabilities at U.S. nuclear plants.

More detail: At San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant in California, 700 workers have been laid off by years end. San Onofre leads whistle blower complaints. Leadership turnover has lead to employee dissatisfaction. The environment is NOT conducive to telling the truth.
Plugged generator steam tubes combined total 1300 plugged tubes. Of the 70 other plants using pressurized water reactors (steam generators) San Onofre surpassed all 70 combined with plugged tubes.
It is clear that the NRC requirement if a nuclear power plant makes too many changes, it must be re-licensed was trying to be avoided by falling below this 5059 rule.
Oyster Creek Nuclear power plant reported cracks in the reactor head. However the NRC simply said there were indications of cracks. They only found these cracks because Oyster Creek was refueling and it's practice to use a dye that penetrates cracks so they are visible. Maintenance would then grind out the crack and re-weld the crack. It's not known how deep the crack is (yet).
At VC Summer in North Carolina, the cracks are apparently "not reportable" according to the NRC because "no water is leaking out of them".
So there is apparently a double standard for region 1 (north) and region 2 (south). Not good, not good indeed.
Bartlett - who was contracted tod o work said the outage would be 21 days.
NRC is re-evaluating earthquake resistance on the recommendation of MacFarlane.
