9/9/2011 Research On US Nuclear Levels After Fukushima Could Aid in Future Nuclear Detection

ScienceDaily (Sep. 9, 2011) — The amount of radiation released during the Fukushima nuclear disaster was so great that the level of atmospheric radioactive aerosols in Washington state was 10,000 to 100,000 times greater than normal levels in the week following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that triggered the disaster.

9/10/2011 Solar power plant to open 15.5 miles from Fukushima

[Editor's Note: This article produced some cognitive dissidence in my brain. On the one hand I think solar energy is an extremely useful and good development, yet this solar plant/theme park for kids is placed far too close to the Fukushima nuclear plant.]

A Japanese children's theme park company is planning to open a major new solar power plant just 15.5 miles from the damaged Fukushima nuclear reactor.

The new project, located on a 3.7 acre tsunami-damaged site in Minamisoma, involves the creation of a one megawatt solar power plant, according to reports in the Nikkei.

Seen in this video is a gamma spectrum, performed with a high-purity germanium detector. In a 50 grams sample of soil (drain / gutter of streets) from the sagamihara area west of tokio (250 km from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant), significant amounts of the synthetic cesium isotopes Cs-137 and Cs-134 were found. These manmade isotopes are from Fukushima, unless there was another, yet unknown incident, meaning the contamination spread quite far.
