When I left for the NATO summit, I expected the police in Chicago were going to be oppressive against protesters, if not downright violent. There had been quite a bit of media buzz around the Chicago Police Department having spent a million dollars on riot and tactical gear, as well as them announcing they had an LRAD (long-range acoustic device), a military weapon capable of emitting painful noises to disburse crowds. Residents of Chicago had been advised to not wear suits (so as not to enrage the protesters), stay indoors, have food and water on-hand, and even to leave town if possible. From my perspective, this was obvious fear-mongering on the part of the police. There was little reason to believe that a peaceful anti-war protest was going to turn into the LA riots. I had no idea, however, how the police were going to act.

Video Description
Kevin Kamps, Beyond Nuclear joins Thom Hartmann. Now on to a story that - tragically - just won't go away: The Fukushima Nuclear crisis. Radioactive fish are now swimming in U.S. waters. Scientists have - for the first time - discovered Bluefin tuna that were contaminated by the Fukushima nuclear crisis in Japan last year - swimming off the coast of California. Radioactive cesium ten times above the normal level was found in the fish - though health officials say the levels are too low to be considered a health threat. Then again - no amount of radiation is good for you. Meanwhile - back at the crippled nuclear plant - a bulge was detected in the walls of reactor four - increasing fears that the structure holding tens of thousands of highly radioactive spent fuel rods is not sound. Should the reactor four building give way - it could trigger a nuclear disaster even worse than Chernobyl.

Nuclear Denial and the Resignation of Gregory Jaczko

Meltdown at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission

The resignation last week of the chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is another demonstration of the bankrupt basis of the NRC. Gregory Jaczko repeatedly called for the NRC to apply “lessons learned” from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant disaster in Japan. And, for that, the nuclear industry—quite successfully—went after him fiercely.

The New York Times in an editorial over the weekend said that President Obama’s choice to replace Jaczko, Allison McFarlane, “will need to be as independent and aggressive as Dr. Jaczko.”

5/26/2012 Iran Nuclear Talks; Explosive Issues Amidst Burning Middle East.

by: Christof Lehmann

The recent Nuclear talks of the five permanent members of the UNSC plus Germany(P5+1) with Iran in Baghdad and plans to continue the talks in Moscow can not be isolated from the NATO-led war which was initiated in 2011 under the euphemism “The Arab Spring” and the undeclared, unconventional war on Syria; the regional geo-political background of an Iran that is asserting it´s position as regional power against the expansion of NATO`s and Israel´s regional hegemony; the complex global geo-political background with a NATO that has declared interventionism, Libya-style, part of it´s new doctrine at the 25th NATO Summit in Chicago; a Russia that is reasserting it´s position as power with global reach and strong regional interests; and the return to a multi-polar world by virtue of the BRICS alliance and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization; the global economic crisis and it´s propensity towards facilitating the onset of major conflicts; the coming U.S. elections; and standard U.S. negotiation strategies with respect to targeted nations.

5/27/2012 Laying the Foundations for Preemptive Nuclear War Against Iran

Source: Activist Post

by: Nile Bowie

As prospects for a preemptive strike on Iran remain ever present, the recent round of talks between the P5+1 and Iran in Baghdad on May 23rd, 2012 have resulted in a familiar stalemate. As a precondition for any deal to stop higher-grade uranium enrichment, Tehran requested immediate relief from economic sanctions as a show of reciprocity [1]. Iranian chief negotiator Saeed Jalili emphasized Tehran’s right to develop peaceful nuclear energy as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, while the P5+1 refused to scale back economic sanctions, insisting Iran suspend its 20% uranium enrichment program [2].

5/26/2012 Nuclear Crisis/Environment Minister and Reporters visit Fukushima No.4

Source: CNTV, NHK World

Environment minister Goshi Hosono and four reporters are given a tour of Fukushima No.4, where the spent fuel rods are housed. The storage pool contains 1,535 fuel rods. This is at a time when there are fears that the spent fuel pool could collapse if there is another earthquake, and cause a massive release of radiation.

Fukushima Reactor 4 poses massive global risk:

" Worst-case scenario

There are a couple of possible outcomes, Gundersen said.

Highly radioactive cesium and strontium isotopes would likely go airborne and "volatilize" -- turning into a vapour that could move with the wind, potentially travelling thousands of kilometres from the source.

The size of those particles would determine whether they remained in Japan, or made their way to the rest of Asia and other continents.(notice how he avoids mentioning the North America!)
(yet "traveling thousands of kilometres" means North America)

"And here's where there's no science because no one's ever dared to attempt the experiment," Gundersen said. "If it flies far enough it goes around the world, if the particles stay a little bigger, they settle in Japan. Either is awful."

Essentially, he said, Japan is sitting on a ticking time bomb. "

connectingdots2: ...again Arnie Gunderson is minimizing the outcome as we already know that since March last year the entire world as been getting dosed with Fukushima radiation fallout.
Something that Canadian nuclear expert Dr Gordon Edwards made sure to mention during his interview on CTVnews.

Commission the Fukushima International Scientific Advisory Team, save Spent Fuel Pool #4, and stop Fukushima.

The following Whitehouse.gov petition for international support to save spent fuel pool #4 has gotten only 678 of  24,322 needed by May 8, 2012:

The #4 Spent Fuel Pool was badly damaged in last year's earthquake and ensuing hydrogen explosion. Its collapse would result in a complete loss of control at Fukushima and a subsequent release of radioactivity so great as to cause what former Prime Minister Naoto Kan has called "a demonic chain reaction" of nuclear meltdowns at nearby plants. Japanese diplomat Akio Matsumura has said this release would "destroy the world environment and civilization."

We the People call on President Obama to commission the Fukushima International Scientific Advisory Team and lead the international community in bringing the weight of the world's collective resources to bear in saving the Reactor #4 Spent Fuel Pool from collapse and ending the slow-motion radiological holocaust emanating from Fukushima.
Please sign and spread the word, looks like they could use our help.

The Journal Environmental Science and Technology reports in a new study that the Fukushima radiation plume contacted North America at California "with greatest exposure in central and southern California," Projected paths of the radioactive atmospheric plume emanating from the Fukushima reactors, best described as airborne particles or aerosols for 131I, 137Cs, and 35S, and subsequent atmospheric monitoring showed it coming in contact with the North American continent at California, with greatest exposure in central and southern California.

Government monitoring sites in Anaheim (southern California) recorded peak airborne concentrations of 131I at 1.9 pCi m−3

Earth's Bulging Waistline Blamed on Glaciers, Oceans

John Roach for National Geographic News Scientists have identified a few suspects behind the Earth's sudden weight gain around the Equator: glacial melt and shifting ocean mass.

"It is quite striking that we are able to explain the [change] with oceans and glaciers," said Jean Dickey, a research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
Both El Niño and PDO involve a periodic warming of ocean currents. El Niño effects are concentrated primarily in the southern oceans, while PDO is observed in the northern.

Dickey's team created a computer model of the pressure exerted by the oceans on the Earth in the years before and after the El Niño and PDO events and found a pronounced shift in oceanic mass towards the Equator, said Dickey.
